Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about our products and services.

Carpet

Where does my MAANA STUDIOS carpet come from and how is it made?

All of our carpets are hand-knotted or woven in the Moroccan atlas . Sheep's wool is usually used for this, less often cotton. A carpet from MAANA STUDIOS is both a unique piece and a natural product.

Would you like to find out more about the origin and production of our carpets? You can find that here . There you will even find a video that provides insights into the production and accompanies the manufacturing process step by step.

Are MAANA STUDIOS carpets produced under fair conditions?

What sets MAANA STUDIOS apart and sets it apart from other retailers: We know our carpet suppliers and manufacturers personally. With some of them we not only have a long-term business relationship on an equal footing - over time this has developed into friendships.

Thanks to the close and transparent cooperation, we can rely not only on quality, but also on fair working conditions . In Morocco, carpet weaving is traditionally the responsibility of women. Purchasing carpets from women's cooperatives paves the way for greater financial independence, as the weavers are regularly and appropriately paid and have social security.

Our carpets are manufactured under Label STEP conditions. The label is a non-profit fair trade organization that advocates for the well-being of weavers and workers in the handmade carpet industry.

What does Beni Ourain mean, the design of our Timeless Knotted Collection?

Moroccan Berber carpets are always named after the tribe - originally the family - that traditionally produces them. “Beni Ourain” is a Berber tribe of the northeastern (Middle to High) Atlas Mountains. The classic pattern of Beni Ourain carpets is the dark diamond on a light background.

What is the difference between Beni Ourain/Timeless Knotted and M'rirt/Ultimate Knotted?

“M'rirt” is a region in the Middle Atlas. M'rirt carpets are significantly more densely knotted than Beni Ourain carpets. As a rule, twice as much sheep's wool is used in their production, which makes them heavier and even fluffier. Since the work required to produce a M'rirt is correspondingly higher, they are traded as particularly high quality and exclusive.

What is the difference between knotted and woven carpets?

The difference between a knotted and a woven carpet is the style . Both carpets are made by hand: in woven carpets the wool fiber is woven using a frame, in knotted carpets it is knotted without any aids. Knotted carpets are usually medium to high-pile, while woven carpets are usually flat. The amount of work and material used tend to be higher with the knotting variant.

How do I know if a carpet is in stock or to order made to measure?

We do not have all the carpets that you find in our online shop in stock. Only those carpets that are expressly marked with “variants in stock” are in stock. You can view these at any time in our showroom. If there are several variants of a carpet, i.e. different sizes, this will also be displayed to you. If the carpet you want is not (no longer) in stock, is too small or too large, there is always the option of having it made to measure. This option will be given to you as “Create your own” .

Which carpet type is suitable for which living space?

Of course, you basically have a free hand when it comes to staging your carpet, but different types of carpet have different advantages. While a deep-pile Beni Ourain made of sheep's wool looks particularly good in the bedroom or living room, a flat-woven kilim is ideal for the hallway, kitchen or children's room.

Are sheep wool rugs suitable for small children and pets?

At MAANA STUDIOS you will find both robust, washable carpets made of cotton as well as hard-wearing and long-lasting carpets made of sheep's wool . Both variants are suitable for both children and pets. There often seem to be great concerns about wool carpets in particular, not least because of their light color and supposedly fluffy fibers. But this concern is completely unfounded. Sheep's wool is not only dirt and water-repellent, but also an allergy-friendly natural product, as its antistatic properties bind fine dust from the air. Sheep's wool can also help detoxify and improve indoor air. Small children and pets shouldn't stop you from buying a carpet: If you choose one of our high-quality sheep's wool carpets, you're not only doing something good for yourself, but for them too!

Pro tip: Go for more patterns and colors or one of our vintage pieces if you want the signs of everyday wear to be less noticeable.

When is professional carpet cleaning necessary?

There is a need for professional carpet cleaning, especially if the need is acute (stubborn and large stains or a strong, annoying smell of wool). However, if you want your carpet to last for several decades - yes, it has the potential! - and is passed down from generation to generation, it is recommended to have it professionally cleaned every two to three years . By completely removing dirt and dust deposits, your carpet will be fresh again and appear like new. With regular cleaning you not only bring great joy to your carpet and the next generation, but also to yourself!

Care

What care does my sheep's wool carpet need?

Our carpets are all very easy to care for and robust. Natural wool has a high proportion of essential oils and therefore has a dirt-repellent effect. The carpets like to be vacuumed regularly, that's all they need.

It happens that our carpets initially shed excess wool from production. The problem goes away after repeated vacuuming.

Do not use a vacuum cleaner with a blow bar or rotating brush.

For more stubborn stains, please contact us . We will analyze the situation and refer you to a carpet cleaning specialist. Cleaning can also be booked online with us.

Please DO NOT use aggressive chemicals for cleaning. There may be discoloration or hardened wool, which cannot be reversed.

Can I vacuum my sheep's wool rug?

You can and you even should! The special nature of the organic wool fiber reduces the deep penetration of protection and dust, which is why your carpet can be easily removed by vacuuming . At the beginning it may be that a little excess wool comes out as a result of cleaning - this is not a bad thing and will subside over time.

How do I treat light stains?

A small stain on the carpet can be caused by one
clean, undyed cloth, a little water and natural soap.

How do I treat my carpet's wool smell?

Since your carpet is a natural product, its natural wool smell may come through. If this bothers you, you can expose it to direct sunlight for a few days: simply spread it out in your garden or hang it over the parapet of your balcony - depending on the size of the carpet, maybe even your window will do. This tried and tested method has always been used in Morocco to remove the smell of wool from carpets. It's best to turn it occasionally so that both sides are exposed to the sun.

Custom made

How are carpets made to measure?

Ordering a made-to-measure rug is quick and easy thanks to our customizer : select the rug design, determine the size, determine the fringes, complete the order and look forward to your custom-made rug of your choice! As soon as we receive your order, we will pass it on to our colleagues in Morocco. Your carpet will be made by hand there. As soon as your carpet arrives in our showroom, we will check it, remove it and send it to you.

If you would like to get advice on custom-made products beforehand, you can do this by telephone, email, LiveChat function or contact form or visit us in person in the showroom: https://www.mybeni.ch/pages/service .

Are made-to-order rugs more expensive than stock ones?

In terms of price, it makes no difference whether you choose a carpet from our range or a made-to-measure carpet. Custom-made carpets in the Timeless Knotted quality cost 300.- per square meter, carpets in the Ultimate Knotted quality 650.- per square meter and carpets in the Essential Flatweave quality 300.- per square meter.

In particular, the amount of material processed (twice as much sheep's wool in Ultimate Knotted as in Timeless Knotted), the amount of work (knotting) and the amount of follow-up work (washing, brushing, combing) are decisive for differences in pricing. Whether a carpet has more or less pattern or color is irrelevant.

Vintage carpets are excluded from this regulation because, in addition to the style, use of materials and workload, other factors are important (including age, condition, exclusivity).

How long does it take to make a carpet to measure?

We calculate 8 to a maximum of 15 weeks to produce a custom-made carpet. If you order online, the calculated delivery date will be displayed to you before you complete your order (under "Delivery" ). If there are any delays, we ask for your understanding - your carpet is made by hand and takes a long journey. You can track the status of your order at any time and see which station your carpet is currently passing through - whether it is still in the hands of its weaver or has just crossed the Mediterranean.

How do I find out about the status of my custom-made product?

You can track the status of your order at any time and see which station your carpet is currently passing through - whether it is still in the hands of its weaver or has just crossed the Mediterranean. You will receive the corresponding link via email with your order confirmation.

Non-slip mats

When do I need a slip mat for my carpet?

Adding a non-slip mat makes sense if your carpet is light and/or smaller . This is especially true for kilims and vintage pieces. With large, heavy carpets - for example M'rirts - the risk of slipping is lower. However, the condition of the surface and the placement of the carpet are also crucial: for stone floors or tiles and in busy living areas , we recommend purchasing a non-slip mat.

Non-slip mats not only reduce the risk of accidents, they also increase walking comfort and cushion the impact. They also protect carpets and floors from wear and tear.

Here you can access the purchase option . When you select the length and width of your carpet using the slider, you will see the price for the non-slip mat.

How does a MAANA STUDIOS slip mat differ from a conventional one?

We source a high-quality product from a Swiss company, which we cut by hand in the MAANA STUDIOS showroom, meaning we can adjust it to your carpet to the exact centimeter. With an anti-slip fleece height of 4.2mm, our anti-slip mats are comparatively thick, and they stick without sticking.

Click here to access the purchase option .
When you select the length and width of your carpet using the slider, the price for the slip mat will be displayed.

Can and should I clean my slide mat?

You can wash your MAANA STUDIOS slip mat in the washing machine at 40 degrees , but this is rarely necessary: small signs of wear are cosmetic defects that do not affect its adhesive function. However, if it has already been in use for a few years or you want to store it fresh and clean, you have the option to do so.
